I’m sure you have plenty of questions about Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, so does everyone else!
Read below to find the answers you need.
What exactly is HBOT?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is the simple act of breathing oxygen while resting inside a pressurized chamber. You will be breathing in pure, concentrated oxygen and the pressure in the chamber (1.3 ATA, about the same pressure as being 11–12 feet underwater) lets your lungs dissolve more oxygen into your blood than they can at normal, everyday pressure. That extra dissolved oxygen travels to tissues throughout the body and can reach areas with low circulation.
How is wellness/mild HBOT different from hospital HBOT?
Hospital HBOT uses hard chambers at much higher pressures (often 2.0–3.0 ATA) to treat specific health conditions and isn’t available to most people without very specific conditions. Mild HBOT at 1.3 ATA is much gentler, with sessions designed for comfort, relaxation, and overall health and wellness support and is available to a much wider group of people.
Is it HBOT safe?
At 1.3 ATA, HBOT is generally considered very safe. The most common temporary effects are a feeling of pressure in the ears (like when flying), mild sinus fullness, or slight fatigue afterward. Serious side effects are extremely rare at this lower pressure.
What should I expect during a session?
Sessions are scheduled for 70 minutes total. You’ll relax in the chamber while we slowly increase the pressure over 8–10 minutes. Most people simply rest, nap, or meditate for about 50 minutes. The last 8–10 minutes are a gentle return to normal pressure. We provide guidance the whole time.
How do I clear my ears?
Just like on an airplane — swallow, sip water, yawn, chew gum (provided) or gently pinch your nose and blow softly to equalize. If you ever feel stuck, we’ll pause and help.
Who should avoid mild HBOT?
The only absolute restrictions are if you have an untreated collapsed lung (pneumothorax) or you are in your first trimester of pregnancy. Otherwise, mild HBOT is very low-risk, but there are some situations where you should get written clearance from a licensed healthcare professional before booking.
Who should get clearance from a healthcare professional?
We ask for written approval if you:
- Have chronic lung disease with trapped air pockets (like severe COPD or emphysema)Have Sickle Cell Anemia
- Have Hereditary Spherocytosis
- Recently had ear, sinus, or chest surgery
- Have frequent or uncontrolled seizures
- Have a history of spontaneous lung collapse
Or if you take any of the following medications:
- Bleomycin
- Doxorubicin
- Disulfiram
- Mafernide Acetate
This doesn’t mean you can’t do HBOT — just that we need your clinician to confirm it’s safe for you.
Will this cure me?
Since we are a wellness studio and not a medical clinic, we don’t like to throw around the word “cure.” What we offer is a gentle, wellness-based experience that supports rest, recovery, and balance in your body. Many guests use sessions to enhance relaxation, energy, and overall well-being, but it is not intended to replace medical care. If you are seeking treatment for a specific condition, you should speak with a licensed healthcare provider to see if mild HBOT makes sense for you.
What can mild HBOT do for me?
People often use mild HBOT for:
- Encouraging deep relaxation, rest, and rejuvenation
- Promoting general recovery after workouts, travel, or busy days
- Supporting mental clarity, focus, and energy levels
- Helping the body’s natural balance and resilience
- Supporting circulation and oxygen delivery throughout the body
- Promoting more restful sleep and a calmer nervous system
- Providing a consistent wellness routine that encourages long-term wellness
Experiences vary and we make no medical claims. Many people simply enjoy the deep relaxation.
How many sessions should I do?
That depends on your personal goals. Some people start with 5–10 sessions close together to see how they feel, while others enjoy adding HBOT as a once or twice weekly routine for ongoing wellness. Because the effects of mild HBOT tend to build gradually, consistency is often more important than a single session. You can start with a trial package and then decide what routine feels right for you.
Like with anything else, the more you put into your HBOT journey, the more you will get out of it. Stay consistent and do it as often and as many times as you can to really get the full effect of it all.
How often can I do a mild HBOT treatment?
As often as you would like to! Mild HBOT is something that you can do everyday because it is gentle on your body. The more often you do treatments, the sooner you will see results. It is recommended to come in once a week or every other week to really see the results you’re after.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear clean, comfortable cotton or athletic clothes. Please avoid lotions, perfumes, hair products or any other products with strong scents. Remove jewelry and leave electronics that aren’t rated to withstand pressure outside the chamber. You may want to bring a book to keep yourself entertained during your session. We’ll provide everything else you need.
What can I do inside?
Read, nap, meditate, breathing exercises, enjoy some quiet time, even stretch (yes the chamber is big enough to move around a bit!), whatever feels best for you to do while you are in there. Most people choose to take the time to rest and relax in the chamber so they can leave feeling even more rejuvenated!
I’m claustrophobic — can I still try it?
Yes. Our chamber has windows and two-way communication, and we can adjust pressure slowly to get used to the space. If you would like, you can come in before booking an appointment so you can see what it looks like to get an idea of whether or not you will be comfortable with the chamber.
Your comfort is always our top priority and we will never push you to go through with a session if you are not feeling comfortable with it.
Are there side effects?
The most common mild effects are ear or sinus pressure, slight fatigue, or temporary stuffiness. These usually resolve quickly. At 1.3 ATA, the risk of serious side effects is very low.
Can I come if I have a cold or allergies?
It’s best to wait until your sinuses are clear. Congestion makes it difficult to equalize your ears and can cause discomfort.
Do you allow children?
Yes, even children can enjoy the benefits of mild HBOT. The chamber is big enough so a parent or guardian can go in with their child to enjoy the benefits together and keep the child comfortable during the session. A parent or guardian’s consent is required.
Can I combine HBOT with other wellness services?
Yes, while HBOT is great as a standalone service, it can be combined with other wellness services to possibly help increase the benefits of the other services for full body rejuvenation. You should still check with your healthcare professional about timing and pairing services.
Do I need downtime after a session?
Nope. You can continue your day as normal. Some guests even return to work afterward.
Is HBOT covered by insurance?
We do not work with or accept insurance but it is something you can try submitting to your health insurance to see if they will reimburse you for your sessions. You will be provided with invoices that clearly state the service for you to be able to submit. It helps to have a health provider’s referral for HBOT when trying to get reimbursed from your insurance.
